  • HUATAO Vibrating Sluice Box is a gravity separation solution designed for placer gold mining, alluvial gold recovery and fine gold concentration. It combines the basic recovery principle of a conventional gold sluice with controlled mechanical vibration or pulsating movement to keep the material bed active during processing.

Unlike a conventional fixed sluice, where heavy black sand and fine sediment can gradually accumulate in the recovery area, a vibrating sluice box continuously agitates the material layer. This helps reduce packing and compaction, allowing heavy gold particles to settle through the flowing slurry while lighter gangue continues downstream.

The equipment is suitable for use as an independent Vibrating Gold Sluice, or as part of a complete recovery circuit connected with a trommel, vibrating screen, scrubber, dredge, hopper or alluvial gold wash plant.

How Does a Vibrating Sluice Box Work?

The basic separation principle remains gravity concentration.

Gold has a significantly higher density than most common sand, gravel and gangue minerals. When gold-bearing slurry enters the sluice, water carries the lighter particles downstream while heavier particles have a greater tendency to settle within the recovery zone.

The difference is that a vibrating sluice adds mechanical movement to the recovery surface.

The vibration or pulsation periodically agitates the material bed, helping prevent excessive accumulation of sand and heavy minerals. This creates a more active separation environment and can be particularly useful when processing feeds containing fine gold, black sand or other heavy mineral concentrates.

The exact recovery performance depends on feed characteristics, gold liberation, particle-size distribution, slurry concentration, water flow, installation angle and operating conditions. Therefore, the vibrating sluice should be selected and configured according to the actual deposit rather than relying on a single standard setting.

    Improved Fine Gold Recovery

One of the main reasons to consider a Vibrating Sluice Box is the recovery of fine and flaky gold.

In a conventional static sluice, excessive heavy-mineral buildup can occupy the available trapping space. If the recovery surface becomes packed, fine gold may have less opportunity to settle into the lower layer of the bed.

The vibrating action helps maintain a looser and more dynamic material layer. This can improve the conditions for fine particles to migrate through the lighter material and become trapped in the recovery zone.

For deposits containing a combination of coarse gold, fine gold and black sand, the recovery section can be designed with different matting and riffle arrangements. A coarser trapping area can retain larger gold particles, while downstream sections can use finer recovery media for smaller particles.

For particularly fine gold, the vibrating sluice can also be used as a roughing stage before a centrifugal concentrator, shaking table or other secondary concentration equipment.

    Anti-Compaction and Anti-Sanding Design

Material compaction is one of the operating challenges associated with traditional fixed sluice systems.

When large quantities of heavy minerals enter the sluice, the recovery area can gradually accumulate dense material. Excessive accumulation may affect water flow and reduce the available trapping space.

The vibrating structure is designed to continuously disturb the material bed and reduce the tendency for the recovery zone to become tightly packed.

This makes the equipment particularly suitable for deposits containing:

    • Fine gold
    • Flake gold
    • Black sand
    • Heavy mineral concentrates
    • Fine alluvial sand
    • Clay-bearing alluvial material after adequate washing
    • Gold-bearing tailings

For sticky or clay-rich deposits, however, proper upstream washing and scrubbing remain important. A vibrating sluice is a recovery unit rather than a substitute for adequate feed preparation.

Suitable for Placer and Alluvial Gold Mining

HUATAO Vibrating Sluice Box is designed for different scales of placer gold mining and alluvial gold recovery.

For small-scale mining operations, it can be installed behind a hopper or classifier to provide continuous gravity recovery.

For mobile operations, the vibrating sluice can be incorporated into a compact gold recovery plant where equipment needs to be transported between mining locations.

For dredging applications, it can be installed downstream of a dredge or sand pumping system after appropriate classification and feed distribution.

For commercial operations, multiple vibrating sluice units can be configured in parallel or integrated into a larger alluvial gold washing plant, depending on required throughput.

    Typical applications include:

    • Placer gold mining
    • Alluvial gold recovery
    • River gold mining
    • Gold dredging
    • Small-scale gold mining
    • Artisanal and small-scale mining
    • Gold-bearing tailings recovery
    • Mobile gold wash plants
    • Trommel wash plants
    • Vibrating screen wash plants
    • Secondary gold concentration circuits

    Integration with Gold Wash Plants

A vibrating sluice box does not need to operate as a standalone machine.

It can form part of a complete process flow such as:

Hopper → Grizzly → Trommel / Vibrating Screen → Vibrating Sluice → Concentrate Cleanup

For deposits containing clay or sticky material, a scrubber can be added upstream:

Hopper → Scrubber → Trommel → Vibrating Sluice → Secondary Concentration

The upstream screening stage is important because excessive oversize material can reduce the effectiveness of the gravity recovery section. Proper classification allows the vibrating sluice to focus on the particle-size range it is designed to process.

For higher-recovery circuits, the concentrate collected from the vibrating sluice can be further upgraded using equipment such as a centrifugal concentrator or shaking table.

    Recovery Mat and Riffle Configuration

The recovery surface is an important part of the vibrating sluice system.

Depending on the feed characteristics, HUATAO can provide different combinations of:

    • Rubber gold recovery mat
    • Sluice carpet
    • Expanded metal riffles
    • Rubber riffles
    • Grooved recovery surfaces
    • Customized trapping sections

The purpose of the recovery media is to create suitable low-velocity zones and turbulence patterns where heavy particles can settle while lighter material continues to discharge.

The configuration can be adjusted according to the expected gold particle size and mineral composition.

For a feed containing both coarse and fine gold, a staged recovery surface can provide different trapping conditions along the sluice length.

    Adjustable Operating Conditions

Vibrating sluice performance depends on more than vibration alone.

Operators should consider the relationship between:

Feed Rate + Water Flow + Slurry Concentration + Sluice Angle + Vibration + Feed Particle Size

The installation angle and water flow should be adjusted according to the actual material being processed.

A lower feed concentration may provide better stratification for some fine-gold applications, while a higher feed concentration may be suitable for specific production conditions.

The vibration intensity and operating frequency should also be matched to the machine design and feed characteristics.

Rather than maximizing vibration, the objective is to create stable movement that keeps the material bed active without unnecessarily disturbing the recovery process.

    Compact Structure and Easy Maintenance

The vibrating sluice box uses a relatively straightforward mechanical structure compared with more complex concentration equipment.

    The main components generally include:

    • Feed section
    • Sluice channel
    • Recovery mat or riffle system
    • Flexible or wear-resistant bottom plate
    • Vibration mechanism
    • Drive motor
    • Support frame
    • Water distribution system

Wear parts and recovery media can be inspected and replaced according to operating conditions.

The modular design also makes the equipment suitable for mobile mining projects where transportation, installation and maintenance need to remain practical.

Vibrating Sluice Box vs. Conventional Sluice Box

A conventional fixed Gold Sluice Box relies mainly on water flow, gravity and the riffle/matting system to capture heavy particles.

A Vibrating Sluice Box adds mechanical movement to the recovery process.

    The main differences are:

    FeatureConventional SluiceVibrating Sluice
Recovery PrincipleGravity + water flowGravity + water flow + vibration
Material MovementStatic recovery surfaceDynamic recovery surface
