How to Select Quartz Ceramic Rollers for Glass Tempering Furnaces?

Quartz ceramic rollers serve as the backbone of horizontal glass tempering furnaces, tasked with smoothly transporting glass sheets under high-temperature conditions—typically between 800 and 1100°C. Their quality has a direct bearing on the surface finish, flatness of the tempered glass, and overall efficiency of the production line.
Purity and Chemical Stability
The purity of silica (SiO₂) is non-negotiable for avoiding glass surface defects like spots or scratches during high-temperature processing. Aim for a SiO₂ purity of 99.7%. Additionally, the rollers must resist corrosion from glass volatiles and cleaning agents, ensuring they don’t contaminate the glass surface.
Thermal Performance
Thermal stability is critical for withstanding the harsh conditions of tempering furnaces. Look for rollers with a low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE)—around 0.5×10⁻⁶/K (20–1000°C)—to minimize thermal deformation and maintain dimensional consistency. They should also handle rapid heating and cooling cycles (such as furnace startup and shutdown) without cracking or chipping, and stay structurally sound during long-term operation at 1000–1100°C with no deformation or creep.
Mechanical Strength and Density
A high bulk density (≥2.2 g/cm³) and low porosity (≤10%) are essential for enhancing wear resistance and reducing particle shedding, which can mar glass surfaces. The rollers should also have a flexural strength of at least 30 MPa at room temperature and 20 MPa at 1000°C to resist bending under the weight of glass. High surface hardness is another must-have, as it reduces friction-induced scratches and extends the roller’s service life.
Dimensional Tolerances
For outer diameter, a tolerance of ±0.05 mm is standard, while length tolerance should be ±1 mm per meter. For hollow rollers, wall thickness uniformity (±0.3 mm) is crucial to prevent uneven heating, which can lead to glass defects.
Geometric Accuracy
Radial runout (total indicator reading, TIR) should not exceed 0.10 mm over the entire length of the roller—this prevents glass from deviating during transport. Straightness (≤0.15 mm/m) and cylindricity (≤0.10 mm) ensure the glass makes even contact with the roller surface. A polished finish with a surface roughness (Ra) of ≤1.6 μm also helps minimize marks on the glass.

Roller Types
The right roller type depends on the glass you’re processing:
Hollow Rollers: The most commonly used type, hollow rollers are lightweight and transfer heat quickly, reducing the risk of "white line" defects on glass. They’re ideal for automotive and architectural glass.
Solid Rollers: Offering higher strength, solid rollers are suited for heavy, thick glass (≥12 mm) but have higher thermal inertia, meaning they heat up and cool down more slowly.
Spiral Rollers: Equipped with spiral grooves, these rollers improve heat uniformity, making them perfect for processing ultra-thin glass (≤2 mm).

Application-Specific Selection Tips
Architectural Glass (3–12 mm)
Opt for standard hollow rollers (e.g., φ63.5×2342 mm) with a TIR of ≤0.10 mm and Ra of ≤1.6 μm. Look for a CTE of ≤0.6×10⁻⁶/K and thermal shock resistance of at least 10 cycles (800°C to room temperature).
Automotive Glass (2–6 mm)
Choose high-precision hollow or spiral rollers with a TIR of ≤0.08 mm and Ra of ≤0.8 μm. A ceramic fiber sleeve is optional but recommended to eliminate "white line" defects.
Ultra-Thin Glass (≤2 mm)
Go for ultra-high precision rollers with straightness of ≤0.10 mm/m and TIR of ≤0.05 mm. These rollers need superior thermal shock resistance (≥15 cycles) to handle the fast heating and cooling cycles required for ultra-thin glass.
Thick Glass (≥15 mm)
Select solid or thick-walled hollow rollers with a flexural strength of ≥35 MPa. They should also have excellent high-temperature creep resistance, with no more than 0.1% deformation after 1000 hours at 950°C.
