How to Diagnose Paper Machine Web Breaks: Press Felt, Vacuum and Doctor System Checks

A recurring web break does not necessarily mean the same component is failing every time.

Poor felt dewatering may reduce wet-web strength. Incorrect vacuum can affect sheet support or release. Roll contamination can interfere with transfer. Problems in the doctoring system may allow deposits to build on the roll surface.

This makes press-section break analysis a process of systematic elimination.

Begin with Felt Dewatering Conditions

The press felt directly influences water handling through the press nip.

Inspect the felt for deposits of filler, sizing chemicals, resin, stickies, fibers and fines.

A contaminated felt can lose permeability and dewatering capacity.

Mechanical condition matters as well. Excessive wear, compaction, reduced thickness and loss of resilience can change the felt's water-handling characteristics.

If the felt contains a seam, inspect its condition across the full machine width.

The shower system should then be verified. Uniform water coverage, correct pressure, clean nozzles, functioning oscillation and appropriate chemical cleaning are all important.

Move Next to Vacuum and Suction Components

Once the felt has been checked, evaluate vacuum at each relevant machine position.

The Suction Press Roll, Pickup Roll, Vacuum Boxes and Uhle Boxes should operate within their required vacuum ranges.

Too much vacuum may interfere with sheet or felt release. Too little can reduce dewatering and leave the wet sheet less supported.

Vacuum box covers can also influence system performance when their surfaces become grooved, worn or mechanically damaged.

Finally, inspect vacuum and water-leg piping.

A restriction, leak or drainage problem can create unstable operating conditions even if the vacuum source itself appears normal.

Check the Doctoring System and Roll Surface Together

Roll cleanliness is another part of stable sheet transfer.

Inspect the doctor blade for installation, wear and free movement. Verify that the holder operates normally, the doctoring angle is appropriate and loading remains uniform.

If stock, fillers or stickies remain on the roll, investigate the complete system rather than replacing the blade alone.

The relevant relationship is:

Doctor Blade → Doctor Holder → Loading → Doctoring Angle → Roll Surface

Extend the Inspection Beyond the Immediate Break Location

The apparent break point does not always reveal every contributing condition.

For overall machine runnability, dryer fabric contamination, plugging, damage and uneven wear should also be inspected.

This broader approach helps distinguish a local press-section issue from a more general web-handling problem.

Build the Troubleshooting Process Around Elimination

A practical order is:

Felt Condition → Felt Cleaning → Vacuum → Suction Rolls → Vacuum Boxes/Piping → Doctoring → Roll Surface → Process Parameters

After each check or adjustment, observe the result before moving to the next variable.

This prevents several simultaneous changes from masking the actual cause.

Press-section web breaks frequently involve multiple interacting conditions. A consistent troubleshooting sequence can therefore provide more useful information than repeatedly adjusting individual settings without a defined order.
