Why High-Purity Fused Silica Rollers Matter in Glass Tempering

A Critical Component Behind Stable Glass Quality

During glass tempering, glass is heated to around 700°C and then rapidly cooled to improve strength and safety. While the furnace controls the thermal process, the quartz ceramic rollers continuously support and transport the glass through high-temperature zones. Their material, dimensional accuracy, and surface condition can directly influence conveying stability and final glass quality.

Low Thermal Expansion for Better Stability

High-purity fused silica is widely used for demanding tempering applications because of its exceptionally low thermal expansion. This helps rollers maintain dimensional stability under repeated heating and cooling, reducing the risk of deformation, excessive runout, and conveying deviation.

Compared with conventional ceramic materials, fused silica can provide more stable performance when processing large, thin, coated, or high-value glass sheets.

Surface Quality Matters

A roller is in direct contact with hot glass. Surface irregularities, excessive roughness, or poor roundness may contribute to scratches, roller marks, vibration, or optical defects.

For Low-E glass, PV glass, automotive glass, and architectural tempered glass, precision grinding, polishing, straightness control, and runout inspection are therefore essential parts of roller manufacturing.

Purity & Thermal Shock Resistance

High SiO₂ purity helps reduce contamination and particle-related risks during high-temperature operation. Meanwhile, the low thermal expansion of fused silica provides excellent resistance to thermal shock, supporting reliable operation during temperature fluctuations and maintenance cycles.

Choose the Roller According to Your Furnace

There is no universal roller specification for every tempering line. Furnace model, glass thickness, production speed, coating type, roller length, diameter, and installation conditions should all be considered before selection.
