Huatao Group Releases Technical Guidance on Pressure Screen Slot Selection
Jul 18,2026
As paper mills continue to pursue higher productivity, cleaner pulp and lower operating costs, pressure screening has become one of the most critical processes in stock preparation and approach flow systems. Selecting the correct screen basket slot size is no longer simply an equipment decision—it directly affects fiber recovery, contaminant removal, production stability and final paper quality.
To help paper manufacturers optimize screening performance, Huatao Group has released a comprehensive technical guide explaining how pressure screens operate and how different slot sizes influence production results.
Pressure screens utilize pressure differentials together with rotor-generated pressure pulses to continuously separate acceptable fibers from contaminants. During operation, accepted fibers pass through the screen basket while shives, stickies, plastics, sand particles and other unwanted materials are retained and discharged through the reject outlet. The alternating positive and negative pressure generated by the rotor also provides a continuous self-cleaning effect, reducing screen plugging and maintaining stable screening efficiency.
The selection of slot width depends primarily on the screening stage within the production process.
For coarse screening, larger slot openings between 0.25 mm and 0.55 mm are commonly used to maximize production capacity while removing large contaminants and protecting downstream equipment.
For fine screening, slot widths of 0.15 mm to 0.30 mm provide higher pulp cleanliness by removing smaller contaminants and fiber bundles, making them suitable for applications requiring improved paper quality.
For the approach flow pressure screen, which represents the final screening stage before the headbox, finer slots between 0.15 mm and 0.25 mm are generally recommended to ensure stable stock quality, minimize contaminants and improve sheet formation.
Huatao Group also emphasizes that screen basket selection should never rely solely on slot width. Engineers should evaluate pulp type, fiber length, production capacity, paper grade, rotor configuration and equipment structure to determine the most suitable screening solution for each production line.
In addition to selecting the proper basket, maintaining appropriate rotor clearance, operating pressure and reject rate is essential for achieving stable long-term performance. Routine inspection and preventive maintenance can significantly extend equipment service life while reducing operating costs.
With years of experience serving pulp and paper mills worldwide, Huatao Group continues to provide customized screening solutions covering internal flow pressure screens, external flow pressure screens, up-flow pressure screens, slotted screen baskets, hole screen baskets and high-performance screening rotors.
The company remains committed to supporting paper manufacturers with reliable equipment, professional engineering expertise and optimized screening technologies that improve efficiency and product quality.
