Small Roller Deviations Can Create Big Yield Problems
A glass tempering furnace may continue running normally for months without any obvious equipment failure. Yet after long-term operation, manufacturers may notice increasing roller marks, optical distortion, flatness problems, or a gradual decline in production yield.
One often-overlooked factor is the aging and precision change of the quartz ceramic roller system.
What Happens After Long-Term Operation?
Continuous heating, cooling cycles, glass loading, mechanical movement, and surface contamination can gradually affect roller performance. Small changes in straightness, runout, surface condition, and roller alignment may accumulate across the entire conveyor system.
A single roller may still appear acceptable, but when several rollers have different wear conditions, the overall roller group can lose its original consistency. This is particularly important for high-speed production of tempered glass, Low-E glass, and photovoltaic glass, where stable glass transportation and precise roller alignment are critical.
Replace the Roller — or Check the Whole System?
Replacing only one damaged roller is sometimes necessary, but it may also create a difference between new and heavily used rollers. For this reason, experienced glass processors should periodically inspect the complete roller group rather than focusing only on individual failures.
Recommended maintenance includes:
- Checking roller straightness and runout
- Inspecting parallelism and installation alignment
- Evaluating surface condition and contamination
- Reviewing roller age and operating history
- Recalibrating the transmission system when necessary
