Doctor blades are routinely replaced wear parts on paper machines. When blade life becomes shorter or doctoring performance deteriorates, replacing the existing blade with a different material may appear to be the simplest solution.
However, blade material is only one factor affecting doctoring performance.
The condition of the doctor holder, shower system, blade loading, doctoring angle, working edge, oscillation mechanism and roll surface can also influence blade service life and roll surface safety.
This means that effective doctor blade maintenance should begin with the entire doctoring system rather than with the blade alone.
1. Clean More Than Just the Doctor Blade
During a scheduled paper machine shutdown, maintenance personnel should remove accumulated paper lint, fibers, fillers, stickies, resin, coating residues and other process deposits.
Cleaning should cover both the Doctor Blade and Doctor Holder.
Clean water or warm water is generally suitable for routine maintenance.
If chemical deposits are difficult to remove, an appropriate cleaning agent may be selected according to the nature of the contamination. Before application, compatibility with the blade material, doctor holder and seals should be confirmed.
Strong acids, strong alkalis and aggressive solvents should not be used without confirming material compatibility.
Hard deposits on the doctor blade working edge also require careful handling.
Using a hammer, screwdriver, steel chisel or similar hard tool to strike or forcibly scrape the blade can damage the working edge.
For Glass Fiber Composite Doctor Blades and Carbon Fiber Composite Doctor Blades, such treatment may cause:
Edge Chipping → Delamination → Microcracks → Premature Failure
Doctor holder cleaning should include inspection of the:
Blade Groove / Blade Slot
Loading Tube
Unloading Tube
Pivot / Hinge
Shower Pipe and Nozzles
Stock deposits inside the blade slot can prevent correct blade seating and contribute to uneven loading across the machine width.
Installing a new blade without cleaning the holder may therefore leave the original problem unresolved.
2. A Good Doctor Blade Still Needs a Reliable Shower System
For a doctor equipped with a shower, including a DST Oscillating Double Doctor System with Shower, shower condition should form part of routine preventive maintenance.
Important inspection points include:
- Blocked shower nozzles
- Uneven cross-machine water distribution
- Incorrect shower pressure or flow
- Improper nozzle direction
- Excessive suspended solids in shower water
- Scale or fibers accumulated around nozzles
- Restricted drainage from the saveall or collection tray
These checks are particularly important around the Couch Roll, Suction Roll and Press Roll.
When shower coverage becomes uneven or individual nozzles become blocked, stock can accumulate locally.
The doctor blade may then experience uneven working-edge wear even though the blade itself has no material defect.
3. Select the Cleaning Method According to Blade Material
Doctor blades made from different materials respond differently to moisture, impact, solvents and mechanical cleaning.
For this reason, one cleaning method should not automatically be applied to every blade.
Carbon Steel Doctor Blade
Avoid leaving the blade wet for extended periods after cleaning. Pay particular attention to rust and corrosion around the working edge.
Stainless Steel Doctor Blade
Its corrosion resistance is better than that of carbon steel, but the working edge should still be inspected for wear and burr formation.
Glass Fiber Composite Doctor Blade
Avoid excessive bending, impact and aggressive scraping. Inspect the blade for signs of delamination.
Carbon Fiber Composite Doctor Blade
Protect the working edge from impact and check for cracks, chipping and delamination.
PE / UHMWPE / PU Synthetic Doctor Blade
Avoid solvents that could soften or swell the material. Thermal deformation should also be included in inspection.
Coated Doctor Blade
Do not use hard tools to scrape the coated surface. Check for coating loss and edge chipping.
For glass-fiber and carbon-fiber composite doctor blades, compatibility between the cleaning chemical and the Epoxy Resin Matrix should also be considered.

4. The Working Edge Can Tell You What Is Happening
A doctor blade should not be evaluated only by measuring how much material remains.
The condition and wear profile of the Doctor Blade Working Edge can provide important information about the doctoring system.
Normal wear should generally remain relatively uniform across the machine width.
When the wear pattern becomes irregular, investigate the cause rather than simply replacing the blade.
One Side Wears Much Faster
Check the doctor holder alignment, blade installation and roll surface condition.
Center Wear Is More Severe Than Edge Wear
Investigate cross-machine loading uniformity and possible doctor holder deformation.
Deep Grooves Appear in a Localized Area
Hard foreign material may have entered between the blade and roll surface.
The Working Edge Is Burnt or Discolored
Check:
Linear Pressure + Lubrication/Shower + Friction + Temperature
Composite Blade Shows Chipping or Delamination
For a damaged glass-fiber or carbon-fiber blade, replacement is recommended instead of continuing operation until complete failure.
The wear pattern should therefore be treated as useful maintenance information rather than simply evidence that a blade has reached the end of its life.
5. Higher Doctor Loading Is Not Always Better
When the roll is not being cleaned adequately, increasing doctor loading can appear to be a quick solution.
But more pressure does not automatically mean better doctoring.
The blade requires appropriate:
Blade Loading / Doctor Loading
together with suitable:
Linear Pressure / Blade Loading Pressure
Insufficient loading may reduce cleaning effectiveness, while excessive loading can create another set of operating problems:
Faster Blade Wear → Increased Frictional Heat → Roll Surface Wear → Higher Drive Load → Shorter Blade Service Life
The correct target is therefore not the maximum possible loading pressure.
Loading and linear pressure should follow the recommendations of the doctor system or equipment manufacturer, with the objective of maintaining appropriate and uniform blade-to-roll contact.
6. A Different Blade May Require a Different Doctoring Angle
Changing blade material without reviewing the doctor settings can affect performance.
The Doctoring Angle / Blade Angle influences the contact between the blade working edge and roll surface.
Even when pneumatic pressure remains unchanged, a different angle can alter doctoring effectiveness and blade wear.
This becomes particularly important when changing:
Material → Thickness → Stiffness
For example, replacing a conventional Glass Fiber Doctor Blade with a stiffer Carbon Fiber Doctor Blade should be followed by a review of:
Doctoring Angle → Loading Pressure → Working Edge Contact Condition
A new blade should not automatically be expected to perform correctly under settings established for a different blade construction.
7. Check the Oscillation Mechanism, Not Only the Blade
An Oscillating Doctor or Oscillating Double Doctor depends on the oscillation mechanism operating correctly.
Routine inspection should cover:
Oscillation Stroke
Oscillation Speed / Frequency
Oscillator
Guide / Linear Bearing
If the mechanism becomes stuck, the blade may remain in the same position relative to the roll surface.
Continuous operation in one location can contribute to the development of localized wear bands or grooves.
For this reason, oscillation performance should be treated as part of doctor system maintenance rather than as a separate mechanical issue.
8. Blade Replacement Should Include Holder and Roll Inspection
A blade replacement provides an opportunity to inspect the entire doctoring contact area.
Instead of simply removing one blade and inserting another, the replacement procedure can follow this sequence:
Machine Shutdown & Pressure Release
→ Remove the Used Blade
→ Clean the Blade Slot
→ Inspect the Doctor Holder
→ Check the Roll Surface
→ Install the New Doctor Blade
→ Verify Parallelism and Doctoring Angle
→ Apply Low Initial Loading
→ Observe Contact Across the Machine Width
→ Gradually Adjust to Normal Operating Conditions
Before installing the new blade, confirm that the blade slot contains no:
- Residual fibers
- Hardened filler deposits
- Rust
- Broken fragments from the previous blade
Even a new doctor blade may not work correctly if the holder is contaminated or damaged.
Safety Is Part of Blade Maintenance
New doctor blades can have very sharp cut ends and edges.
Personnel handling the blades should use suitable cut-resistant gloves and safety glasses.
The replacement procedure should also comply with the paper mill's shutdown and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements.
9. Use Maintenance Data to Select the Right Blade Material
Comparing doctor blades only by unit purchase price provides an incomplete picture of their actual cost.

A less expensive blade does not necessarily provide the lowest total operating cost.

The basic maintenance principle remains simple:
Keep the blade, doctor holder and roll surface clean; maintain uniform blade loading and the correct doctoring angle; regularly inspect blade wear, shower performance and oscillation.
From a maintenance perspective, the doctoring system should be viewed as a combination of:
Doctor Blade + Doctor Holder + Blade Loading + Doctoring Angle + Shower System + Oscillation + Roll Surface
When these elements are inspected and maintained together, the doctor system can provide more stable operation while helping avoid unnecessary blade wear and roll surface damage.
