Power Failure in a Glass Tempering Furnace: What Should You Check First?
A Sudden Shutdown Requires More Than Simply Restoring Power
An unexpected power outage can interrupt glass tempering production within seconds. However, the biggest risk is often not the outage itself, but an improper response afterward.
When power is lost, residual heat remains inside the furnace. Glass may still be positioned on the quartz ceramic rollers, while the heating and conveying systems are no longer operating normally.
Step 1: Check the Glass Position
Before restarting the furnace, determine where the glass has stopped. Its location, thickness, temperature, and residence time can affect the next handling procedure.
Glass remaining in a hot zone for an extended period may deform, crack, or create abnormal contact with the rollers.
Step 2: Protect the Furnace & Rollers
Do not open or enter a hot furnace simply because the electrical power is off. Always follow the furnace manufacturer's emergency and safety procedures.
Once the equipment reaches a safe inspection condition, examine the quartz ceramic rollers for:
- Glass adhesion or residue
- Surface damage or abnormal marks
- Cracks or deformation
- Shaft and bearing abnormalities
- Unusual roller movement or resistance
A roller that appears normal from a distance may still require detailed inspection before production resumes.
Step 3: Inspect Before Restarting
When power is restored, avoid immediately returning to full production. Check the control system, heating and cooling functions, roller transmission, safety interlocks, and other critical components according to the equipment manufacturer's procedure.
If the outage was caused by an internal electrical or mechanical fault, identify the root cause before restarting.

For emergency replacement, keep records of the roller diameter, ceramic length, overall length, shaft dimensions, furnace model, and supplier information.
