Checked the Equipment but the Paper Machine Still Breaks the Web?
Mechanical inspections are an essential part of web-break troubleshooting, but they do not always reveal the complete cause.
When the visible problems have already been addressed, the investigation should move toward the relationship between dewatering, wet-web strength and operating conditions.
Three groups of process variables deserve particular attention.
1. Is the Press Nip Operating in the Correct Loading Range?
Press loading directly influences water removal and the condition of the wet sheet.
Excessive nip loading can place too much mechanical stress on the web and may result in sheet damage or crushing.
Insufficient loading can leave too much water in the paper.
This creates another potential chain of problems:
Low Nip Load → Inadequate Dewatering → High Sheet Moisture → Reduced Wet-Web Strength → Higher Break Risk
Individual press nips should not be considered separately.

2. Is the Wet Sheet Being Stretched Between Machine Sections?
Speed differential is often described as draw.
Even a mechanically sound paper machine can experience breaks if the wet sheet is subjected to inappropriate draw or tension.
Review speed relationships within the press arrangement and at the key machine transitions:
Forming → Press
and:
Press → Dryer
Combined and compact presses may require particular attention because speed relationships within the press configuration can directly influence wet-sheet tension.
The weaker the wet web, the more sensitive it becomes to excessive stretching.
Where rope threading is used, carrier rope alignment, operating tension and mechanical condition should also be checked.
3. Did the Process Chemistry Change Before the Break Problem Started?
This question is sometimes overlooked.
When a paper machine suddenly begins experiencing repeated breaks, compare the current operating conditions with those used before the problem appeared.
Look for changes in:
Stock Furnish and Fiber Composition
as well as:
Retention Aid + Drainage Aid + Dry-Strength Agent + Other Wet-End Additives
An incorrect chemical addition rate can influence drainage and fiber bonding.
It may also affect sheet formation and paper strength.
The dosage can be problematic in either direction: both excessive and insufficient addition may contribute to unstable operating conditions.
Shower Water Is Part of the Process Equation
The condition of the press felt is closely related to its cleaning and lubrication environment.
Check both the lubrication shower and high-pressure cleaning shower.
Flow and pressure should be appropriate for the actual operating requirement.
If shower conditions are incorrect, felt cleanliness and permeability may deteriorate, which can influence dewatering and sheet release.
Therefore, shower performance should be reviewed together with press loading, draw and wet-end chemistry rather than treated as an isolated maintenance item.
Connect the Variables Instead of Looking at Them Separately
A useful way to approach the problem is:
Nip Loading → Dewatering → Sheet Moisture → Wet-Web Strength
followed by:
Draw / Web Tension → Sheet Stretching → Web Stability
and:
Furnish / Chemical Dosage → Drainage + Fiber Bonding + Formation + Paper Strength
These relationships explain why repeated web breaks may continue even when no obvious mechanical failure is visible.
The most useful troubleshooting approach is therefore to compare operating conditions systematically and adjust variables individually rather than changing multiple parameters at the same time.
