How to Specify the Right Feed Roller for Your Drum Chipper

A feed roller is a critical component in a Drum Chipper that grips and advances raw material into the cutting mechanism. A split-type feed roller separates the roller shaft from the toothed plates, allowing for quick replacement without disassembling the entire drive system.

The upper feed roller applies pressure (hydraulic or gravity), while the lower roller provides the driving force. The interlocking teeth grip the material and feed it uniformly. In a modular design, the toothed plates are secured to a square shaft with high-strength screws. When worn, only the plates are removed and replaced.

To solve feed roller issues in a drum chipper, replace traditional one-piece rollers with split-type modular toothed rollers. This design allows worn tooth plates to be replaced in 1-2 hours without dismantling bearings or the gearbox, reducing downtime and ensuring consistent chip quality.

Advantage:

Drastically Reduced Downtime: A technician can replace the plates in 1-2 hours, compared to half a day for a monolithic roller.

Consistent Chip Size: Sharp, well-maintained teeth prevent material from slipping, reducing wood fines and improving the efficiency of the Wood Chips Screen.

Lower Energy Consumption: Consistent feed reduces load spikes in downstream processes like pelletizing and pressing.

Applications

Wood-Based Panel Production: Preparing chips for MDF, particleboard, and OSB lines.

Biomass Pellet Plants: Processing waste formwork, pallets, branches, and wood scraps.

Selection Guide

Check Machine Compatibility: Verify the shaft diameter and mounting configuration.

Assess Raw Material: Choose coarser teeth for branches and finer teeth for veneer scraps.

Determine Power Rating: Ensure the drive system has sufficient power to grip wet or large-diameter logs.

Decide on Upgrade or Retrofit: Retrofitting older machines with an adapter square shaft is cost-effective.

Procurement Guide
When ordering Chipper Spare Parts, provide the OEM part number, shaft dimensions, and tooth profile requirements. Ask the supplier for material certificates and heat treatment reports. Ensure the supplier can provide custom solutions for specific shaft diameters and can support OEM replacement.

Case Study
Customer Type: Medium-sized Particleboard Manufacturer
Operating Conditions: Processing waste wood pallets with high impurity content.
Problem: Monolithic feed rollers wore out quickly, causing frequent downtime (half a day per replacement) and inconsistent chip quality.
Solution: Retrofitted the chipper with a split-type feed roller and high-strength toothed plates. This ensured a steady flow of material to the Forming Machine.
Result: Downtime reduced from 4 hours to 1.5 hours per replacement. Wood fines reduced by 15%, and overall line efficiency increased by 20%.
