A Complete Overview of Vacuum Press Rolls for Paper Machine Press Sections

What Is a Vacuum Press Roll?
The vacuum press roll, also known as a suction press roll, is a high-precision dewatering component installed in the press section of a paper machine. Its shell is fabricated from corrosion-resistant alloys such as stainless steel or bronze and incorporates thousands of precision-drilled holes arranged in a staggered pattern. Inside the roll, a stationary suction box connected to a vacuum pump generates a controlled negative pressure zone. The entire roll assembly rotates while the internal box remains fixed, allowing water to be drawn radially through the holes and away from the wet paper web.

How It Works
The primary function of this equipment is to remove water from the wet paper web more aggressively than a conventional plain press roll. As the web, sandwiched between two press felts, passes over the suction zone, the applied vacuum — typically maintained between 15 and 25 inches of mercury — overcomes capillary resistance within the sheet. This suction force pulls free water from the paper web into the felt and subsequently through the roll shell. This mechanical and vacuum-assisted dewatering process achieves three key results: increasing sheet solids entering the dryer section by approximately 5 to 8 percentage points per press nip, reducing steam consumption in the dryers, and improving fiber bonding along with overall sheet strength through more uniform moisture distribution.

Key Features
The vacuum press roll offers several notable features. High hydraulic removal efficiency means the vacuum actively extracts water rather than relying solely on mechanical pressure, reducing the risk of sheet crushing. Improved sheet uniformity is achieved as suction minimizes two-sidedness by evenly removing fines and fillers from both surfaces of the web. Nip dewatering control allows the vacuum zone to be precisely located and profiled, enabling operators to tailor water removal across the machine direction and width. Additionally, modern vacuum press rolls are dynamically balanced and designed for high-speed machines exceeding 2,000 meters per minute.

Maintenance and Safety Precautions
Several critical precautions must be observed. Drill holes are prone to blockage by stickies, pitch, and fines; regular cleaning using high-pressure oscillating showers operating at 80 to 120 bar, along with edge doctoring, is mandatory. Cyclic loading, as the rotating shell passes over the stationary suction box, induces alternating stresses; routine non-destructive testing, such as dye penetrant, eddy current, or ultrasonic inspection, is essential to detect micro-cracks before catastrophic shell failure occurs. The sealing strips inside the roll, typically made from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, wear against the rotating shell; worn seals cause vacuum leakage, increased energy consumption, and uneven dewatering. Seal clearance must be inspected weekly. Aggressive suction can drive contaminants deep into the felt structure; proper felt conditioning, including Uhle boxes and shower systems must be maintained to prevent felt filling. Finally, never service a vacuum roll without isolating the drive motor and vacuum pump, as residual pressure and rotating parts present severe entanglement and impact hazards.
